Canadian Schools of Nursing

Canadian schools of nursing have slight differences from other nursing schools.

Due to a shortage in nursing school faculty, there has been a dearth of Canadian nursing school entrants as of late. This has contributed to the nursing shortage in Canada. Currently, about two-thirds of the necessary nurses are being recruited by nursing schools. Furthermore, those offering nursing positions are beginning to require higher-level degrees. For example, hospitals, where more than ninety percent of RN nurses are employed, are now seeking nurses with at least an undergraduate degree, if not an even higher level of education. This is primarily due to changes in the field that render it more complex and challenging for those who practice nursing. Thus, in order to reduce nurse attrition, those hiring nurses are expecting entrants that are better prepared to deal with numerous variables in the field. Alternately, nursing remains a relatively lucrative field. In Ontario, the average nursing hourly wages range from $26.80 to $38.74; in Alberta, this range is from $27.93 to $36.67; and in British Columbia, this range is from $29.30 to $38.46.
